6 Windows 11 settings you need to change right now
1. Disable Ads in Windows 11
Ads have gone crazy in Windows 11. You will find featured apps in the form of ads
on your Start menu. Then you have suggested contents on your Settings page. Also
don’t dismiss the fact that recently, search results also include embedded ads.
If you want to get rid of these pesky ads, open the Windows 11 Settings window
and go to Privacy
& security. And, under the General section, disable all the buttons
(toggles). This will help make your Windows 11 experience a lot smoother.
2. Disable Random Notifications
Windows 11 definitely is polished and shiny, however the constant nagging to try out the Microsoft-based products is frankly quite annoying. Now and then, you’ll get a notification that suggests you install the “Your Phone” app or maybe a different notification that pops up that suggests you try the new Edge browser. After a while, these notifications kind of get on your nerves.
To disable
this little annoying feature on Windows 11 is to disable the suggested
notifications. Open the Windows 11 Settings window and go to System
-> Notifications. Scroll down to the bottom and disable the buttons for
“Offer suggestions on how I can set up my device” and the one that reads “Get
tips and suggestions when I use Windows”.
3. Change Your Default browser
After
switching over to Windows 11, a lot of users will notice that they can no
longer change the default web browser with a few clicks from the Settings page.
It’s because Microsoft wants their users to try out (and use) their new Edge
browser, which we feel isn’t a bad option. But, if you prefer to use Chrome or
Firefox or any other browser apart from Edge perhaps for their stability and
privacy features, you will have to take a few extra steps to change your
default browser in Windows 11.
If
you want to change the default browser on your Windows 11, open Settings and navigate to Apps -> Default apps -> Edge.
Then,
click on all the link types and change them to your preferred browser.
4. Block Third Party App Installation
This
option isn’t necessarily for everyone, but if you have a child or an elderly person who will be using
a Windows 11 computer, it’s recommended to lock the third-party
app installation method. This will stop the installation of possibly harmful .exe
files downloaded from the web and keep your computer free from malware and
possible viruses.
And
with that in mind, the Microsoft Store on Windows 11 is getting most of the
commonly-used apps, from Winzip, Zoom, Discord & VLC.
Here
are the steps to block third-party app installation, open your Windows 11
Settings window and go to Apps ->
Apps & features. From the
drop-down menu next to the “Choose where
to get apps” option, choose “The
Microsoft Store only”. Voila! That’s all there is to it.
5. Disable Autoplay in Windows 11 App Store
Yes,
the new Microsoft Store on windows 11 is fast and polished, however some people
might not approve of the autoplay videos that start playing when you open a
certain app page.
If you want to disable video autoplay on the Microsoft Store, open the Microsoft Store and go to “App Settings” from the profile menu located next to the search bar. Once there, disable the toggle for “Video autoplay”, and that is it.
6. Adjust the Power mode in Windows 11
Not a lot of people realize that Windows automatically sets
the power mode to “Balanced” as to save battery life and offer not so bad, balanced
performance on the move.
But, if you prefer the best performance all the time, We
suggest that you adjust the power mode settings on Your Windows 11 Laptop.
Open the Windows 11 Settings window and navigate to System -> Power & battery. Under “Power mode”, choose "Best performance” from the drop-down menu. We suggest that you restart your system to allow all services to run under this new configuration. Enjoy your new sped up Windows 11.
