Sloclap's Sifu is an engaging action-adventure game requiring players to master its martial arts combat and death system to see it through to the end successfully. Although Sifu is not a standard roguelite, it incorporates many of the genre's typical elements, requiring players to repeat sections of the game to obtain better results, which can make the later stages of the game easier. In addition, the protagonist will age with each death in Sifu, which will provide certain perks and some penalties.
As players go through Sifu's stages, they will encounter many difficult enemies that will test their ability to survive. Every time players die, they will grow older by an amount that will increase with each death; this is known as the Death Counter. The first time a player dies in Sifu, they grow one year older, the second time two years older, etc. This means that if new players die a total of four times without reducing the Death Counter, they will turn 30 years old.
For every 10 years that
players grow older, they will begin inflicting more damage, but their health
pool will be reduced. Players will have plenty of time to learn how to parry
and counter in Sifu as they will begin the game at age 20 and
can go all the way up to 70 years old. Dying after the age of 70, the
game will end, and players will be forced to restart the stage they are in.
This system creates an interesting situation where players' expertise increases
with the protagonist's age, and their defensive skills are rewarded with an
offensive debuff.
How To Reset The Death Counter In Sifu
Although it is not possible to reduce age in Sifu, there are ways to reset the Death Counter and therefore lower the penalties for dying in the game. Players will have an opportunity to do this whenever they fight special and difficult enemies in Sifu, ranging from one-on-one fights to specific groups of enemies or enraged foes. Winning one of these fights will reduce the Death Counter by one, but players can also reset the Death Counter entirely by finding a shrine and offering it 1000 experience points.
Whenever players finish a stage in Sifu, the game will save the character's age and Death Counter before moving on to the next one.
As players face the next part of the game, they will be limited by how well they did the previous stage as both stats will carry over. Because of this, many players might find it optimal to go back to earlier stages of the game in order to get better results, which will translate into an easier and more forgiving time in the later parts of Sifu.
